Electron Microscopy: Photoshop Tips
Getting Started
• Open “Photoshop CS/CS2”
• Select FileàOpenà [File Path]
• Select WindowàOpen History and Layers
• Select ImageàModeàRGB Color
• Select ImageàModeàAssign ProfileàProfile: Adobe RGB (1998)
Layers
• Select LayeràNew Adjustment LayeràLevels
• A histogram will appear; adjust the black and white sliders to constrain the graph (HINT: hold down “Alt” while adjusting sliders); adjust the gray slider to desired contrast
• Creating this layer is helpful in adjusting the contrast of the image.
• In order to increase contrast, create an S-curve by selecting a point on the line roughly one fourth of the way from the bottom left corner and dragging it down. Then select a point one fourth of the way from the top right corner and drag it down. [Note: The image below is a very extreme S-curve. Yours should not require such extreme adjustment.]
• In order to decrease contrast, create a reverse S-Curve. That is: raise the bottom portion of the line and lower the upper portion.
• In addition, if you want to adjust the magnitude of the midtones, select the middle of the line and drag it toward either the upper left corner or the lower right corner according to what you desire.
