This is the first section where I start to teach Photoshop, and I start with the Selection tools. Through a methodical approach to them, I find I can introduce good workplace behaviors and procedures.

I classify class time activities as exercises and worksheets. I usually demonstrate the process on a large screen (my Apple Lab has a built in projector connected to my computer) while student’s have their screens turned off. Depending on the difficulty or complexity of the process, I may have students do work along with me. In class time activities I monitor student’s screens and help them as needed, and encourage peer advising and coaching.

Assignments are usually longer term projects that student’s work on independently, though I do encourage peer feedback and coaching. An assignment is usually given when the class is at an even level of competency with tools and processes, and allows them to demonstrate (and for you to assess) their work habits, ability to follow directions and overall strategy and comprehension.

Photoshop is an easy place to only assess skill mastery. I include some paper and pencil tests to provide another indicator. It is difficult (as in all Studio work) to evaluate a person’s “creativity”. In later assessments I will try to include this type of evaluation by reserving 10‐20 points for my own (admittedly personal) assessment, the rubr4ic for which I have tried to include with other skill benchmarks.
