All 1989-94 BMW vehicles are equipped with a self diagnostic system for the detection of injection faults. When a fault is detected by the system the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) records the code corresponding to the defect in the ECU’s memory until either:
1) The vehicle battery or the ECU is disconnected.
2) The engine is started 60 times with no recurrence of the fault.
3) The ECU memory is cleared using the BMW MODIC, DIS, Bosch KTS300, KTS500, or the Baum Tools CS1000 or CS2000 BMW hand held scanner.

The radio is theft-protected. If it is disconnected from the vehicle power supply or the power supply to the radio has been otherwise interrupted, “CODE” will appear on the display the next time it is switched on. After pressing the button, the prompt “CODE” is displayed, followed by 4 stars. The four-digit code must then be entered using the multi-function buttons “1-0”.

From year 1995 in Audi-VW (VAG) cars is used engine immobilizer. The VAG group immobilizer system consists of an immobilizer ECU which controls the recognition of keys and the Engine Management ECU system. Immobilizer is activated when the ignition key is removed and, together with the engine control unit, largely prevents unauthorized starting of the engine. The system uses a transmitter and receiver unit in the ignition key (transponder). Whenever an attempt is made to start the engine, it transmits a new code to the car’s electronics. The immobilizing is only cancelled and car motor electronic receives permission to start engine if the key sends a right authorization code.

When the ignition key is turned to OFF, the immobilizer inhibits engine operation. When the ignition key is turned back to ON to start the engine, the following happens:
1) if the CPU recognised the code, the CODE light on the instrument panel will flash briefly. This means that the immobilizer system has recognised the key code and enabled engine ignition. When you press the START button, the engine will start up.
2) If the CODE light stays on, it means that the code has not been recognised. When this is the case, turn the ignition key back to OFF and then to ON again. If the engine still does not start, try with another black key. If the other key does not work out either, contact the DUCATI Service network.
