There is a lot of software, both free as well as commercial, to create animated GIFs. The majority of software available is shareware, where a user may download a trial version for free prior to purchasing [2]. According to Download.com, the two most popular software for creating GIF animation are Ulead® GIF Animator TM (Ulead Systems Inc., Torrance, CA, USA) and CoffeeCup GIF Animator (CoffeeCup Software Inc., Corpus Christi, TX, USA) [3]. In this feature presentation on Proteomic Technologies and Cancer, we will take a close look at how scientists and physicians are working to identify clinical biomarkers – the molecular signatures that indicate the presence of cancer. These signatures, made up of proteins and other molecules found in patient samples such as blood, will usher in a new approach to medicine based on early detection, and rapid response.

These days there are almost no limits to what you can do with web graphics. The ubiquitous use of Flash has transformed the internet and today, web designers have to be half graphic designer and half multi-media expert. Of course, most web sites are still predominantly HTML based because they are easier to content manage. Flash is normally reserved for small animations within the page or for online advertising. Only specialist or niche sites tend to be completely created using Flash. This means that old web design favourites, such as animated GIFs, should still be around for a while yet. With this in mind, we have incorporated them into this month’s navigation design tutorial. We hope to demonstrate how distinctive design, coupled with simple animation, can turn the most basic navigation bar into something special.

Introduction to Flash – Exporting from Flash

Now that you know how to create animations and working interactivity with Flash the only remaining section to show you is how to export your finished product to the web and beyond. Accompanying this tutorial is a downloadable zip file you can use as an example to try out exporting or you can use any of the previous animations you have created during these tutorials. First save your working file or “.FLA” by going to File > Save. This is not web ready and should not be distributed. Next we can look at creating files for distribution to the web and CDROM. Basil – Scripting Flash from Smalltalk

Adobe Flash File Format (SWF) is a vector graphics format designed for publication on the web. At the moment it is the most popular file format to display animated vector graphics, far exceeding SVG which has not yet prevailed. To view an SWF file the user needs to install the Adobe Flash Player which is also available as a browser plugin for all major platforms in several languages.
