New GTV and Spider Buyers Guide

This article covers the Alfa Romeo GTV and Spider models launched in 1995, which remained in production until 2005. The Pininfarina design was bold at the time and still looks fresh today. Both models shared the same front end and there was some mechanical part commonality with the 155, which was based loosely around Fiat Tempra underpinnings.

The first part of this attempt to revisit the industrial history of Alfa Romeo finished on a dramatic stage: Alfa Romeo was on the verge of closure, and only a miraculous move lead to the removal of Managing Director Orazi, entrusted to arrange the liquidation of the company, and his replacement with a high profile manager, Ugo Gobbato, now in charge to restructure Alfa Romeo and upgrade its capacity to successfully meet the needs of Mussolini’s regime for advanced mechanical industries able to provide military supplies for the then forthcoming wars.

Alfa Romeo GT JTS Selespeed RoadTest Report

Enthusiasts whose budget can’t stretch for the V6 GT can take heart. Alfa Romeo’s four cylinder variant is here. While it may not have a rasping six under the bonnet, you won’t feel short changed. Retaining the style of its more powerful sibling, smaller 16” alloys are the only external clue to the four cylinder version. Buyers will still need to be ready for some admiring glances.

The Alfa Romeo brand name is one of the most emotive in the automobile world, with a sporting heritage that stretches way, way back. The subject of this test – the 156 GTA manual sedan – captures all the excitement, exhilaration and emotion of the Alfa Romeo spirit, perhaps better than any other Alfa model of recent times. At the heart of the 156 GTA is an engine that is just sensational. ALFA Romeo Association Tech Session / Presented

This document is based upon an “ALFA Romeo Association Tech Session / Presented by Larry Dickman Jr., ALFA Parts Exchange” paper. Mike Nakamura used Larry’s guide to upgrade a 1971 Montreal and I used the information provided by Mike to upgrade my 1972 Montreal. I have added to the information provided by Mike to provide a little more clarification and detail.

Larry developed this upgrade to fit within common 14″ ALFA wheels and there are several routes one can follow to achieve the finished result. You can modify old 115 rotors creating iron hats and attach new rotors or you can have custom aluminum hats machined. The drawings provided are for custom hats. I have made every effort to insure that the information included is correct and I have successfully performed this modification to my own Montreal. If you find any errors and/or omissions you can contact me at alfagene@adelphis.net.

The Alfa Romeo 145 buying tips

Look under the bonnet, between the strut tops and the windscreen – there should be a black triangularish piece of foam (one each side). Lift it out and look underneath for rust. Also check the drainage channels aren’t blocked. Paint chips badly, so check the leading edge of the bonnet carefully. The valence might look tatty, but its plastic so won’t rust. Drop the front windows fully, then raise them again, making sure the glass stays in the channel. They can (and do) tilt slightly, which causes the glass to come out of the channel and either not close properly at the top, or fail to go up all the way. They can be adjusted so its not the end of the world. A typical issue of the Alfa Romeo 145 is dried up doorrubbers. Dried up doorrubbers causes windnoises and even can damage your paint. They can be replaced easily. Check all the electric’s work (it is an Alfa!) and especially the airco if fitted (an option?). Trembling heatshields (exhaust) can be spotted on Alfa Romeo’s 145. They can be fixated easily.

Reliability crucial to Alfa 159 marketing

TRW Automotive supplies the Alfa Romeo 159’s standard electronic stability control system, which automatically brakes individual wheels and adjusts throttle to prevent slides and spins. TRW’s stability control system also offers two additional features: hill-hold, a function that automatically keeps the brakes applied until the driver gives the right amount of acceleration to start on a slope without rolling backwards; and brake assist, which automatically increases the pressure applied to the brake pedal in the event of an emergency. Alfa Romeo relied upon fellow Fiat subsidiary Magneti Marelli for one of the transmissions in the new lower-premium car.
