Building AJAX JSF Components

AJAX is an acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XMLHttpRequest. The XMLHttpRequest object is a de facto standard object provided by browser-based JavaScript implementations, and when used in an asynchronous fashion it allows the page author to communicate with the Web server in the background of the page, without giving the user any visual cue that this communication is occurring. The Web browser’s “spinner” does not spin, the hourglass mouse pointer does not appear, and the browser does not “block” in any way. Using the XMLHttpRequest in concert with standard JavaScript and DOM APIs allows the page author to dynamically update the page with arbitrary server-supplied data.

UPS Monitor Software User’s Guide

All new UPS systems have the serial communications port on the back panel, labeled RS-232C. The cable for most UPS units is made with two male DB-9 connectors. It connects between the female DB-9 connector on the UPS rear panel and any compatible serial port on the computer. Be sure the cable is shielded and is terminated on the shell of the connector. This section describes cables connecting the UPS to a serial port on your computer. See the next section, “Switch Contact Port Cabling,” for information on constructing a cable to use the port labeled “UPS Port” on the back of many Alpha Micro computers.

Converting PSD files to TIFF files

First of all … why? Why would we want to convert PSD files to tiff files? This is what Jen Caputo says in a DST forum … ‘Save your layouts as TIFFs instead of PSDs, you’ll save yourself at least 50% of the disk space. You sacrifice NO quality when saving as a TIFF, it’s just shrunken down, but remember, the compression it uses is lossless, so when you open it back up everything expands right back to where it was before.’ Anyone who uses Photoshop should use layered TIFFs instead of PSDs.’ So basically, you save heaps of space on your hard drive … and who doesn’t want to do that???
