The definition jointly given by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) and the European Commission (EC) is “Multimodal transport: carriage of goods by two or more modes of transport.” Sometimes, multimodal transport is connected to the international transport of containers and the need for transport facilitation. It derives its name from the United Nations Convention on International Multimodal Transport of Goods of 1980. The definition of the term “international multimodal transport” is provided in article 1 of the Convention, which reads as follows:
