Using PowerPoint is perhaps the easiest way to make a good poster. Most users are familiar with Microsoft Office and can navigate the tools with some confidence. Even easier than making a poster is making a poster that won’t print. What follows are instructions for minimizing the likelihood of an unprintable poster. File Size
Working with Photoshop means working with large files; manipulating those files increases their sizes considerably. Therefore managing file size is critical, as it affects the performance of the computer, the storage options, and most importantly for significant number of IC users, the space it occupies on the screen. File size can by cut by first reducing the file resolution to fit the output medium (print, email, web..); second by reducing the pixels dimension; third by changing the file format, which is the final step before the image is ready to be exported. For the image to fit within the screen, the pixel dimension should be less than the pixel dimension of the monitor ( 800×600 for a standard 15 inch monitor screen, 1152×864 for IC monitors).

But they add up to quite a lot, especially for 3D work, visualization, and working on a laptop with a cramped screen (figure 1). The latter situation may occur often now that ArchiCAD supports terminal server technology that makes it possible to work over the Internet from a remote location.

Macromedia Flash opens up an entirely new dimension within the realms of the Internet. No longer is one confined to the newspaper-like, flat nature of websites. Websites that were once stark, boring, and lifeless can now literally jump out and excite all of one’s primary senses. This breakthrough in delivering dynamic multimedia over narrow bandwidths provides a new perspective on how we interact with websites, and ultimately, how we organize content and information itself. Flash, as an authoring tool, is limited only by our vast imaginations, and its mastery is within grasp of all those who wish to put in effort and practice.

This tutorial will show how to create a simple layout from scratch in PSE3. You will learn how to create a new document, bring in photos, resize elements, add text, add shadows, and save your layout.

Create a new document
1. Once Photoshop Elements is open, go to File>New…
2. In the New pop up window, enter the working name of your layout (you can change this later if you want to) in the Name field.

What’s Sphinx?
- FOSS full-text search engine
- Specially designed for indexing databases
- Integrates well with MySQL
- Provides greatly improved full-text search
- Sometimes, can improve non-full-text queries
- By more efficient processing (in some cases)
- By distributed processing on a cluster (in all)
- Details later in this talk

Sphinx is a free, open-source full-text search engine that was designed from ground up for indexing the content stored in local databases. Sphinx can pull the data from many different databases, but it ties especially well with MySQL. It offers a number of improvements compared to MySQL’s built- in full-text indexes; but what’s interesting, in some special cases it can also improve general purpose, non-full-text SELECT queries. It manages to do so either by processing the queries more efficiently than MySQL, or by distributing the load across the cluster of Sphinx nodes, or by combining both. We’ll return to that in the second part of the talk.

The Overeager Mouse Highlights Too Much Text
Frequently, in a Word document, I need to highlight some text that extends past my viewing area. Unfailingly, when I click and drag with my mouse and go beyond the screen, the highlighted portion just ZOOMS past where I actually wanted to copy, and I end up with highlighted pages and pages of text that I didn’t want. Then, I have to click in the document to undo the highlighting and try again..
