Optimizing Images for Web Pages and PowerPoint

Optimized images look better and load faster in both web pages and PowerPoint, and the faster a page or slide loads, the better. Large, un-optimized images can slow a presentation down, and adversely affect its performance. In addition, PowerPoint handles some file types better than others, and web browsers will only allow certain kinds of images to be displayed by web pages. Most professional scans of slides and other media will be saved in “.TIF” format, which can’t be used for display on web pages and shouldn’t be used in PowerPoint presentations. During optimization, files can be converted from one form to another. For further information on file formats, consult our PowerPoint guide (make a link here please).

Creating Figures: A Basic Recipe for Image Composites Using Photoshop and PowerPoint

Photoshop vs. PowerPoint: Which one should I use?
Photoshop and PowerPoint are both very flexible applications-each is capable of performing raster image manipulation as well as text and vector editing with varying degrees of success, reliability and ease. While Photoshop is the choice for making adjustments to your raster image’s file format, resolution, size, contrast, color balance, alignment and to crop or merge images together (image editing), PowerPoint is preferred for creating figures and doing image compositing and annotation because the text and vector based annotation will remain sharp. This is not the case for these vector-based elements in Photoshop- there is a loss in quality of text and vector objects when changing file formats to non-proprietary, pixel-based formats.

Optimizing Your Images for the Web with Adobe Photoshop

When placing an image on a web page your image should be only as large as it needs to be to display correctly on the page. If your image is too large (800 x 600) and you resize it within the Dreamweaver application by dragging its corners, the file size is not reduced, just the visual size of the image. If you reduce the image size in Photoshop to display the correct size on the web page, you can save file space/size and allow the viewer to view the image much quicker. (For example: An image sized at 800 x 600 could be a 2MB file. If that file is reduced to the size needed on the page, e.g., 360 x 413, the file size can be brought down to 436k. This file is easier for someone to view on a web page through their network connection and saves space on the server.
