The procedure below was written up for a 1998 2.0 Twinspark with vented front discs but should be the same for all 156 models. The shape of the pads will differ between vented and solid discs at the front. Later models have larger rear discs and therefore different pads. It should not matter if we are talking standard brakes with normal or drilled/grooved discs with high-speed road pads – the process is the same. The only difference is that some front pads don’t have the wear indicator so you will need to tie the cable back out of the way if not required.

1. Removal of the original bumper:
Remove all screws which hold the bumper. Also remove the screws which hold the alloy bar and remove the bumper with the alloy bar. Remove the alloy bar from the bumper and install it into the new Hofele-Design bumper.
2. Placement of the Hofele-Design front bumper on the car:
Place the new bumper on the car but do not yet bolt it on.

I. Preparing the Vehicle
1. Elevate the vehicle (Figure 1) and secure the body with jack stands.
2. Remove the front wheels (Figure 2).
II. Strut Removal
1. Remove left and right sway bar retaining bolts and save for reinstallation (Figure 3).
2. Remove the ABS line retaining clamps from the strut and discard
3. Remove the lower strut mounting bolt and save for later use (Figure 6).
4. Remove the upper strut mounting nut and discard, but retain the upper mounting bracket (Figure 7).

Front door trim, removing and installing
1 – Door trim
Remove screw cap – 5 -
Remove screw – 4 – (1x).
Unclip inner and outer connecting pieces. .
Lift door trim about 20 cm upward and remove from door.
Detach release cable for interior door handle
Disconnect electrical connectors
Clip locators – 3 – (7x) must be clipped in place when installing door trim.

Getting Started
a) Make sure vehicle is parked on a level surface.
b) Set parking brake. Install rear wheel chocks.
c) If the engine has run with in the past two hours let it cool down.
d) Jack the front of the vehicle and support using properly rated jack stands.

The good ol’ Monster rear suspension: single adjustable Boge-Sachs rear shock. It’s gotten a bad rap as an underperformer, but it is still a quality piece with much better adjustment than many other sportbike shocks allow. Then again, why wouldn’t it? It’s a Ducati.

The Trailer Emulator requires the ground and 12 volt battery line to be properly connected in order to check the electric brake circuit. 12 volt light on the emulator will be lit as soon as the emulator is connected to the tow vehicle’s plug. If this does not happen see Troubleshooting Chart. The RT, LT, TL and BU lights will light on the emulator as those functions are activated on the tow vehicle. If this does not happen see

A phone prewire extension harness(center console to left side trunk, illustration 1) must be installed on the E46 (328i, 328iA) produced the first two weeks of 6/98 if the phone kit is being installed. The phone prewire option SA640 was not installed on vehicles produced during the first two weeks of 6/98. E46′s produced after the second week of 6/98 will have this phone prewire option SA640 installed at the factory.
