This tutorial will walk you through downloading data from your Garmin eTrex Legend GPS units onto a computer using the Minnesota DNR Garmin software.

Step 1: Install Software & Drivers Download the Minnesota DNR Garmin software available free @ http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/DNRGarmin/DNRGarmin.html
You want to download the “DNR Garmin 5.1.1 – ArcGIS 9.x compatible” version Once the data has been downloaded – run the set-up files and install the software Your Garmin eTrex Legend’s come with a serial port to USB adaptor cable. You now need to install the driver for this cable. The CD was included in your technology toolkits – and is a Belkin driver.

There are five (5) main pages on the Garmin unit.
• The Satellite Page
• The Map Page
• The Pointer Page
• The Highway Page
• The Active Route Page
These pages are arranged sequentially on the unit, like on a rolodex. The Page and Quit keys are used to navigate between the pages. For example, if you are viewing the Satellite Page and you want to see the Highway Page, you can get there by pressing the Page key three times or the Quit key twice.

When the unit is turned on, the GPS Information Page comes into view. Toward the top of the page it will say AAcquiring Satellites@. The hollow satellite status bars will turn black (right part of page) as the GPS locks on to the satellites– a process called an “initial fix”. This can take anywhere from 15 seconds to 13 minutes. In order to get a good GPS reading, the AAcquiring Satellites@ message should turn to A3D GPS Location@. The GPS can also collect points under A2D GPS Location@, but with much less accuracy. Once the AAcquiring Satellites@ message turns to A3D GPS Location@ or A2D GPS Location@ the GPS screen automatically switches from the AGPS Information Page” to the AMap Page”.
