The purpose of this application is to provide to the user an indication as to whether the actuators or strain gauges associated with each of the segments of the NAOMI deformable mirror are working within their expected limits during NAOMI operations. The application consists of a single window which contains a graphical representation of the NAOMI deformable mirror. Each one of the 76 segments is associated with three actuators which collectively , can move the segment in three dimensions. Each of the actuators has a range of 0-8192 with the midrange value being 4096. As the measured value of an actuator deviates from the midrange value, the colour of the actuator on the display will change accordingly.

A time traveler from 50 years ago would find today’s Formula 1 cars radically different, but would be equally surprised at the relative lack of change in engine technology. Turbochargers have come and gone and there hasn’t been a switch to two-stroke or rotary, scotch yoke engines – let alone to gas turbines or something not even invented in 1950. The good old four-stroke internal combustion engine powered the very first Grand Prix car in 1906 and lives on in a form instantly recognizable by any time-traveling engineers from 1950.

The on-the-road performance of passenger cars are often discussed in terms of kilometres driven per MJ (or other unit of energy). This does not do justice to the different payloads that different cars are certified to carry, perhaps considering the poor correlation between required, actually used and available passenger and cargo space characterising the vehicle choice of many passenger car owners. Campaigns have occasionally been directed at increasing customer usage of the available payload (better trip planning, pool arrangements), but automobile sales material often mentions only km/MJ overall performance, if anything at all related to energy efficiency (mentioning energy performance is mandatory in some European countries, but mostly not done in North America).

Before you start installation
Take some engine bay pictures for later reference.
Make a special drawing of all the coolant hoses going to the different parts of the stock intake, you will need this later on. The same goes for the vacuum hoses to the different parts of the intake.
Mark the electrical connectors to the MAP sensor and TPS sensor. You will need this later on.
Drain the engine coolant.
