How to Use Layers – Photoshop

Layers are like stacked transparent sheets on which you can paint or place images, shapes, or text. You can see through the transparent areas to the layers below. You can work on each layer independently, experimenting to create the effect you want. You can adjust a layer’s color and brightness, apply special effects, change its opacity, and change its stacking order. If you want to experiment with color, filters, or other adjustments, you can place an adjustment or fill layer above the image and see the affects without making any changes to the layer that contains your image. To remove the effects, simply delete the adjustment layer.

How to Add a Touch of Color to a Grey Scale Photograph with Adobe PhotoShop Elements

Sometimes, you can add uniqueness and interest to an ordinary looking (but well-composed) color photograph just by draining all the color from it except for one or two well-placed elements of the photo. In digital photography, you can do it very easily it in just a few minutes. I did this with Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2. I’m sure it can be done with equal ease using other photo editing software such as Paint Shop Pro, Adobe PhotoShop CS, etc. The nomenclature may be a little different, but the basic steps will be similar.

Photoshop® Basics: The Standard Curve

This chapter covers the heart and soul of image processing for just about any astronomical image. You will learn how to apply the principles of the Zone System using Photoshop® CS (or later). Photoshop® CS adds a critically important feature: the ability to use layers and other tools with 16-bit images.
