What I’ve found is that there is no single, simple method that will work for selecting hair. What I have come up with is a method that will work under all circumstances. It is a bit tedious, though. Most of my pictures didn’t have a nice clean background. That made creating a mask difficult.
This was typical. Notice that it’s not easy to even see the hair.

3 different ways to darken the background
This Tutorial shows 3 different ways (Levels, Selective Color, Lighting Effects Filter) to darken the background of an image with Photoshop 7/CS. It also briefly discusses how to use Blending Modes for layers and Layer Masks. Levels, Lighting Effects Filters and Blending also work for Photoshop Elements 3. There are several other ways to darken backgrounds in Photoshop (Curves, …) and many other image processing tools offer similar functionality to improve your photos

Photoshop is a graphic editing tool that allows the user to create and manipulate images for print, the web, and other media. It is a powerful tool and this handout only introduces the basics; many of the tools need to be explored by the user to see all of their capabilities.

Tools Found in the Toolbox
The tools in the toolbox let you select, paint, edit, and view images. Other tools are used to choose foreground and background colors, create quick masks, and change the screen display mode. Many tools have associated Brushes and Options Palettes, which let you define the tools’ painting and editing effects.

1. Interface
Besides being the most apparent change when you launch Photoshop CS3, the new interface builds on the strengths of Photoshops past. Part of the beauty of the new interface is that although it’s familiar, there are some important changes that make it more efficient. The Palette Well is gone, and the Workspace menu appears right in the Options Bar. The palettes can be collapsed to small icons, and if you press Shift+Tab to hide all the floating palettes, the palettes will reappear when you hover over the right side of the work area. This new interface is all about giving you a larger work area and from what I can tell, it takes the average user around 47 seconds to love this new interface
