For some reason, almost every PHP tutorial on the planet makes the implicit assumption that if you’re using PHP with a database, that database is going to be MySQL. Now, I have absolutely nothing against MySQL − I think it’s a great product, and I use it fairly often in my development activities. However, it’s not the only good open−source RDBMS out there − most developers have been playing with PostgreSQL for quite a while now, and quite a few of them would love to integrate their PostgreSQL backend with PHP. The only problem is, they have no idea

Adding a Color Tint in Photoshop CS3

One of the “secrets” of adding a great-looking color tint to a photo is starting with a great black and white image. Thanks to the new Black & White command in the Photoshop CS3 Beta, it’s very simple to create a great black and white image–and add a color tint.

Step One
Although you can apply the Black & White command from the Image>Adjustments menu, I highly recommend using an Adjustment Layer instead (you’ll see why a little later). From the Layers palette popup menu, choose Black & White from the Adjustment Layer menu. Here’s the result without changing any settings:

This article focuses on an often-neglected but all-important aspect of any software application – the user interface. For years, desktop applications have had boring gray rectangular windows, buttons etc. Animation, multi-media, visual effects and custom elements were possible, but required large amount of custom programming. Even making a non-rectangular button would need good C++ skills. The web and its use of Flash change the equation. Web-based applications look far more attractive and user-friendly than comparable desktop application, but are easy to develop with Flash. In this article, we present ideas for using Flash inside VB applications, thus injecting new life into desktop software products.
