Photoshop for Art Teachers: selection tools

This is the first section where I start to teach Photoshop, and I start with the Selection tools. Through a methodical approach to them, I find I can introduce good workplace behaviors and procedures.

I classify class time activities as exercises and worksheets. I usually demonstrate the process on a large screen (my Apple Lab has a built in projector connected to my computer) while student’s have their screens turned off. Depending on the difficulty or complexity of the process, I may have students do work along with me. In class time activities I monitor student’s screens and help them as needed, and encourage peer advising and coaching.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 Workshop

The toolbox may be the single most important component of the work area, as it contains most of the tools you’ll use for selecting, moving, cropping, retouching, and enhancing your images. The tools are arranged in the general order you’ll be using them, with the most commonly used selection tools near the top, through to the painting, drawing, and color selection tools toward the bottom. The toolbar is docked on the left edge of the work area where the tools are displayed in a single, long column. If you prefer, the toolbar can be pulled a short distance from the left edge, where it will display the tools in Adobe’s more common, two-column format

Getting Started With Photoshop: Basic Tasks to create Web-Ready Images

For purposes of this tutorial, we will be working with a number of image files located in a folder called Photoshop Class Samples. This folder should already be on your desktop if you are part of the Photoshop class. Create another folder on the desktop with your name. We will want to preserve our original photos in the Photoshop Class Samples folder, and store our working copies in this new folder. We only want to work on the files in the working files folder, which will later be saved for the web. Never work from your master images. That way, you can always start over from the original image if necessary.
