How to create a JPEG file using Adobe Photoshop

You may never have created a JPG file using Photoshop before, you probably normally save your files in the proprietary PSD Photoshop format, so these instructions take you through the steps of creating a JPEG file in Photoshop.

Resizing your image
All digital images will be judged at a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. The 1024 is the width across, making the image a landscape format. Firstly, you should resize your image to fit within that pixel area. You will probably want to maintain the proportions of your image, so you may choose to add a background colour to fill any remaining space.

Photoshop Saving Files for the Web

Developing images for the web (or for distribution through a web browser) is tricky in that you have to walk a fine line between having beautiful graphics and having images that load quickly. The larger the image (memory-wise), the longer it will take to load, and the more impatient your user will get waiting for it.

In addition, you can’t use just any file format for the web, you have to use one that is compatible with browsers and html. Currently, you have two file format options for web images, GIF and JPEG.

Learn to Design an Adobe Flash web page header

Adobe® Flash® is the most popular way to add animation and interactivity to web pages. When you work on a flash project, the source file that you save is a .fla. When you want to see how your project will look on a web page, you will ‘publish’ the file as an .swf file which is embedded into a .html file. An ‘object’ tag which contains the parameters for the flash ‘movie’ can be embedded into an html file with Dreamweaver® or using the Flash application itself. This lesson will be for the Windows operating system (Sorry Mac Users). So let us go through the process, step by step… Here are the images that I will work with. They’ve been created in Photoshop (see my web design tutorial). Note that most of them have transparent edges. To create this effect (In Photoshop), select and copy each element from a layer of the design and paste into a new canvas. Make sure that the background layer is turned off. Save as a .png file and select Interlace:None from the PNG Options.
