Understanding text in Photoshop – a vector format When you create type in Photoshop you are actually creating a mathematical equation which defines the individual shapes of the letters and numbers that you are typing. Each character is a vector drawing which makes your type scaleable while maintaining quality.

This means that while Photoshop itself is pixel based tool, Photoshop type contains vector-based type outlines. When you manipulate your text, for example, making it bigger or smaller, it will maintain its sharp edges. Even if you do this repeatedly, the text will stay clean and crisp. This ability of vector based outlines is known as resolution independence.
